My Closing Thoughts

Stand Up to Stand Out

What is your professional or personal expertise?  Are you comfortable in sharing that expertise with others in a public speaking environment?  At first, I was the classic nervous-nellie with my public speaking.  The simple solution is that the more you speak in public, the more comfortable you become.

Not as a paid professional (my wife is the professional key note speaker in our family), but as a person with some specific knowledge, I enjoy speaking in public.  Over the past several months, I have developed about 10-12 topics on which I share my knowledge to local businesses, organizations and civic associations.  In two of the programs, I partner with a very close friend, who has more expertise in these two areas that I do.

I urge each of you to develop a topic or two that is based on your expertise, hobbies and general interests and share it with the general public.

If you have truly spent some extra effort to gain your specific knowledge, it is time for you to STAND UP TO STAND OUT and share with others.

With that special sharing effort, you will become known as a resource that others can turn to for information, education and perhaps a little entertainment.  If you are standing up, others will see and hear your knowledge and often think of you.  If people (prospective clients) are thinking about you as a resource, can that be all bad - I think not.

If you would like to brainstorm with your very special expertise, I will be glad to share a cup of coffee and review a mutual strategy.

Just for fun, look at www.standuptostandout.com and see where that takes you!

Out of the Mouths of Babes

In the beginning, which occurred near the start, there was nothing but God, darkness, and some gas. The Bible says,"The Lord thy God is one," but I think He must be a lot older than that.

Anyway, God said, "Give me a light!" and someone did. Then God made the world.

He split the Adam and made Eve.  Adam and Eve were naked, but they weren't embarrassed because mirrors
hadn't been invented yet. Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating one bad apple, so they were driven from
the Garden of Eden. Not sure what they were driven in though, because they didn't have cars.

Adam and Eve had a son, Cain, who hated his brother as long as he was Abel. Pretty soon all of the early people died off, except for Methuselah, who lived to be like a million or something.

One of the next important people was Noah, who was a good guy, but one of his kids was kind of a Ham. Noah built a large boat and put his family and some animals on it. He asked some other people to join him, but they said they would have to take a rain check.

After Noah came Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.  Jacob was more famous than his brother, Esau, because Esau sold Jacob his birthmark in exchange for some pot roast.

Another important Bible guy is Moses, whose name was Charlton Heston. Moses led the Israel Lights out of Egypt and away from the evil Pharaoh after God sent ten plagues on Pharaoh's people. These plagues included frogs, mice, lice, bowels, and no cable. God fed the Israel Lights every day with manicotti. Then
He gave them His Top Ten Commandments. These include: don't lie, cheat, smoke, dance, or covet your neighbor's stuff. Oh, yeah, I just thought of one
more: Humor thy father and thy mother.

One of Moses' best helpers was Joshua who was the first Bible guy to use spies. Joshua fought the battle of Geritol and the fence fell over on the town.  After Joshua came David.  He got to be king by killing a giant with a slingshot. He had a son named Solomon who had about 300 wives and 500 porcupines.  My tteacher says he was wise, but that doesn't sound very wise to me.

After Solomon there were a bunch of major league prophets. One of these was Jonah, who was swallowed by a big whale and then barfed up on the shore. There
were also some minor league prophets, but I guess we don't have to worry about them.

After the Old Testament came the New Testament. Jesus is the star of the New Testament. He was born in Bethlehem in a barn. (I wish I had been born in a barn, too, because my mom is always saying to me, "Close the door! Were you born in a barn" It would be nice to say, "As a matter of fact, I was.") ha ha ha!!!!

During His life, Jesus had many arguments with sinners like the Pharisees and the Republicans. Jesus also had twelve opossums.  The worst one was Judas Asparagus.

Anyways, Jesus died for our sins, then came back to life again. He went up to Heaven but will be back at the end of the Aluminum. His return is foretold in the book of Revolution.

I Was Thinking About You

Guest Columnist - Rene Godefroy

Have you ever called a friend and you hear, "oh, I was just thinking about you.  I am like, really, thinking about them?  What's wrong with my fingers (well, I say to myself). I don't know about you, I can stand it a few times.  But as soon as it becomes a routine, I get sick of it.

I must admit that sometimes I get into the "I was just thinking about you" syndrome.  Why do we do that?  Well...I guess it's because of plain laziness.  You know, we have good intentions.  We really want to call, but we get lazy.  Come to think of it, I am thinking about a couple of people that I will call right after this writing.  Even if they are not at home, I will leave a message.

Now, if you are in business or in sales, I have an idea for you.  Right now - many of your customers may be thinking about you!  But, they are lazy and they will not call you.  You know what?  It's your job to stay in touch.  You never know...they might be thinking you.  Since I started this newsletter, you will not believe how many past clients that call and email to let me know they intended to call me.  All right, that's enough about business.

For those of you who don't have to worry about staying in touch with past clients, please call those folks you have been thinking about.  You never know...a pleasant surprise might be all that someone might need for a boost.  Things change...and stuff happens.

MAKE THAT CALL NOW!

Stay in touch... Will you?

REALLY Great Marketing Ideas!

Have you ever had a REALLY successful marketing effort?  I am talking about the type of success that surprised you.  Granted, we all want super success from our sales and marketing efforts.

If you have had such a result, whether one big success or a lot of little successes, let me hear from you and, with your permission, I will post a collection of the TOP TEN results.

Send your marketing successes to me at joe@joestiles.com and relive your efforts.

Some of personal suggestions of REALLY GREAT marketing ideas are as follows:
  • Read the local newspapers for corporate mergers, acquisitions, corporate relocation, etc.  Also look at the Help Wanted Advertisements for multiple hiring positions from the same company, which could mean expansion and growth.
  • Join a networking organization (www.hwcoc.org) or form your own organization if you do not like what you see in the marketplace.  When joining a new networking organization, do not forget the principle found in 1 Peter 4:10.  It will "serve" you well.
  • Create a HOW TO program for prospective clients in an effort to help them grow their business.  I promise, your prospective clients will not forget who made their growth possible, if you offer a program so bold and dramatic to their business development efforts.
  • Create a Media Profile on your website.  To help the various forms of media learn more about you, educate them with a page or two on your website.
  • Keep your database of contacts current and fresh. Tracking your business sources is very important to both parties, especially if you are sharing important information about a product or service.
  • Become an authority with your industry experience.  Use your knowledge to share with others and at the same time become a "go to" person for information, guidance and reliability.
  • Stand Up to Stand Out by developing unique community-interest programs that local organizations and companies will call on you to share your expertise.
  • Sponsor a trade association or charity breakfast or afternoon tea meeting in which you are profiled as the generous sponsor and contributor.
  • For new opportunities, vary your lead and referral sources.  Be sure to look into trade associations, professional organizations and alumni associations.
  • Find a complementary partner with whom to develop new business leads with a variety of programs and contacts.
  • Practice your "elevator speech" often and in front of a mirror and with a recorder to make sure you are succinct and concise.
Let me hear about your great marketing ideas!

What the World Needs Now...

Last month, you read about my first act as the Grand Poobah of the United States of America being the elimination of the phrase of "have a nice day" from our vocabulary.  In substituting this phrase, I proposed  "thank you for your business" or "thank you for choosing (your company name)" or "please call (or visit) us again."

This month, I am taking up the crusade of eliminating "sorry about that" and "my bad" from our vocabulary.  "Sorry about that" and "my bad" are not even close to being acceptable apologies.  These slang terms are often used by multiple generations, including the baby boomers - of which I am one, as an attempt get out of a very uncomfortable situation.  Rather than a simple, "please excuse me"  or "please accept my apologies," I have heard people resort to these classless slang terms to (feebly) excuse themselves.

To gain the respect of each person we offend, why shouldn't we say " I am sorry, please excuse me" or "I beg your pardon, I made a mistake."  People will be quicker to overlook our faux pas when we apologize properly.

What is your first edict as Grand Poobah of the United States of America?

MY CLOSING THOUGHTS:

Do not be afraid to network with others as a means of expanding your business.  Sharing with others will help you develop a serving heart and create a notoriety for you as a valuable resource person for others to contact.

Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching.  (Hebrews 10:25)

Now...when there is biblical guidance, you are on solid ground in serving others.

Thank You for being a part of our monthly newsletter.  It is my intent to inspire, entertain and inform everyone.  I value your feedback and suggestions on future topics you would like to see.

My wish for each of you is God's richest blessings of this very, very special Christmas season.
