The Leadership Puzzle |
The Leadership Puzzle...putting the professional piece in place. (The second in a series of four short articles) How are you at making changes that improve your life effectiveness?
If you can lead yourself then what will it take to lead others? The professional cornerstone of leadership involves nine characteristics that will build a sustainable leadership model. Everything is centered on being able to share a leadership vision. Having a vision is the ability to see beyond today into the exciting world of what can be. To sell the vision to others we must be able to build a bond of trust with them. That process often takes time and great patience. When connecting with those that are important to the vision a leader must have an ability to listen without judgment, to allow opposite opinions. The more information collected, the more focused the vision can become. No purpose is achieved alone. It is a true leader that can recognize the strengths of others and use them to support achievement. The mark of an effective leader is solid decision making skills. Decisions are made quickly, focused and with confidence. Relationships that surround a leader are built on a common trust and respect that connects all to the common purpose. Positive relationships create motivation to reach for the final vision or purpose if the leader has shared it effectively. Many of us are successful with personal challenges but can we translate our personal success to igniting success in others?

Don't Quit... |
|
Have you ever been tempted to give up and just quit everything? Read on for a little inspiration.
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will; when the road you are trudging seems all uphill and when funds are low and the debts are high and you want to smile but you have to sigh; when care is pressing you down a bit, rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is strange with its twists and turns, as every one of us sometimes learns and many a failure turns about when we might have won...had we stuck it out.
DON'T GIVE UP...though the pace seems slow, you may succeed with another day!
Success is failure turned inside out. The silver tint of the clouds of doubt and you cannot tell how close you really are. It may be near when it seems so far away, so stick to the fight when your hardest hit. It is when things seem worst that you must not quit.

HAPPY Food! |
|
Would you believe that food can have an affect on how happy you feel? These little nuggets of food information were found in the February 8, 2009 edition of the Houston Chronicle.
Consider these foods
BREAKFAST CEREALS:
The lack of folic acid can make you feel depressed. Where can you find folic acid without buying a pill? Consider breakfast cereals that contain folic acid that boosts the levels of serotonin.
WALNUTS:
Omega-3 fatty acids are abundantly found in walnuts as well as flaxseed and salmon. Food rich in these fatty acids increase endorphins.
BEANS & GRAINS:
Carbohydrate-rich foods contribute to higher levels of serotonin, which leads to higher levels of pleasure. Whole-grain breads, rice, potatoes and pasta are also rich in carbs.
TOFU:
Tofu is rich in protein and also contains tyrosine, which is an amino acid that enhances our moods. Protein is also found in low-fat dairy products; e.g., cottage cheese, egg whites and lean meats and some fish.
EGGS:
Eggs are a good source of Zinc, which helps regulate our metabolism. Don't like to eat eggs? Try calf's liver, raw cremino mushrooms or boiled spinach. After all, look what spinach did for Popeye.
If you have other food tips, please share them with our readers so we all may be happy and alert. :-)

Your 30 Seconds of Fame...mastering your elevator speech |
The title of one of my public speaking programs is "Your 30 Seconds of Fame...mastering your elevator speech." This dynamic program focuses on how to craft your networking 30 seconds of fame and get more interest.
Here are two test questions for your networking skills.
- What is the LEAST important component of your elevator speech?
- What is the MOST important component of your elevator speech?
Our elevator speeches are important because we have only about 30 seconds to make an impression on a person who might be interested in doing business with you.
How does your elevator speech positively
(or negatively) reflect on you?
OH...If you want an answer to the above two questions, you have two choices...ONE, you can email me at joe@joestiles.com or you can attend the 02-18-09 Business over Breakfast meeting that I host for the Houston West Chamber of Commerce ( www.hwcoc.org).
If your company or group needs a guest speaker, let me hear from you. I will be glad to send a listing of a dozen really great topics that I offer.

More Reasons to Re-enlist |
| As a USAF veteran myself, I enjoy these little bits of humor from the military. I hope you do also.
The "best" reasons to re-enlist are:
- Being an adult and having somebody inspect me everyday to make sure I put my clothes on properly, and put my shoes on the right feet.
- Having to wear a "cover," or hat, every time I want to go outside.
- I love cleaning the same places over and over and over until either the paint comes off or my hands are bleeding.
- Without the military's influence and good teaching, I would never have realized that you can sweep water with a broom for hours every time it rains.
- I love the fact that my opinion has about as much influence as my sister's pet iguana's.
- If I got out, I would surely miss the idea of waking up every morning for a "meeting."
- Getting to wear civilian clothes whenever I am on leave.
- Getting to eat meat that comes in boxes labeled " not fit for human consumption" and "for institutional use only."
My thanks to the website "usmilitary.about.com" for the memories of my service in the USAF.
Be sure to say THANK YOU to the military personnel for our safety and security.
If your schedule permits, consider being a volunteer at the USO facilities at the Bush Intercontinenal and Hobby airports and be refreshed. | |

KIDS SAY THE FUNNIEST THINGS..
My daughter was about 7 and obviously reaching the end of her rope with homework. She said, "I just can't do any more Mom, I have a mind-grain".
My brother was talking to his 4-year-old daughter, my niece, and said, "I have a dilemma." My niece said, "Dad, what's a dilemma?" My brother said, "It's when I have two choices, but I don't like either of them." My niece replied with absolute authority, "Daaaad, that's not a dilemma, that's a predicament."
I recently asked my four yr old what she wanted for breakfast. She replied "I want the cereal that listens to me" (referring to Rice Krispies).
My own kids thought that was what your belly button was for (a baby door). My oldest son was four when his baby sister was born. He was distressed that he had one (a belly button) and was relieved when I told him that *wasn't* where the baby came out. "Phew!" he said, "that would really hurt!" I replied, "You have no idea."
If you have a favorite and/or inspiring quote, please share it with me.
