Think on These Things
Things I Remember

Several years ago, I started writing about "Things I Remeber" while sitting around the house in my favorite recliner.

These "things" are a random collection of events and experiences that are funny, sad, entertaining, educational...well, you get the idea.  There is no particular order of the Things I Remember nor is one memory related to another memort.

Let me give you a couple of Things I Remeber:
  • In 1988, I gave my son, Brad, his first driving lesson on a standard transmission car.  He had only learned to drive with an automatic transmission car. This really funny story was about that driving lesson and the evolution of his mastering the clutch and accelerator at the same time.
  • Another story was when my son at the ripe old age of 15 served as my best man at our 1988 wedding.  He offered the wedding toast and got a nice kiss on the cheek from Linda...complete with the funny facial expression, which we recorded.

The point of this article is the fact that my son asks about my writings from time to time as he is anxious to read the stories in my own handwriting.

If you want to do something simple and memorable, write about Things You Remember for your family.  It is amazing the amount of interest interest it will create not only for you, but also for the remainder of the family.  And, maybe, just maybe, they will want to do the same.

The Value of Time

Within our American political culture, we routinely toss around budgetary topics of BILLIONS of dollars (and now Trillions of dollars).

With the following, let me give you a mental picture of what a billion is.

  • A billion seconds ago was 1959
  • A billion minutes ago, Jesus was alive
  • A billion hours ago, our ancestors were living in the Stone Age
  • A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes.
Can you think of a billion reasons to vote at the next election?

Reach Out and Touch Someone
What type of touching is appropriate?

When is touching appropriate?

Here are a few of my personal experiences:
  • The touch of a firm handshake can indicate sincerity.
  • A pat on the (upper) back or shoulder to signifiy a warm greeting and/or a sign of a "job well done."
  • A hug can be a sign of affection with a close friend that has not been seen in a while.
  • A hand on a shoulder may have a calming affect in a tense moment.

What is your experience in touching others and being touched by others?

Let me hear from you at joe@joestiles.com

When is the "BEST" Time to Buy Your Dream Home?

If you ask any lender or real estate agent when is the "best" time to buy the automatic answer is NOW!

Let's give the automatice answer of NOW a little more thought.

  • Buying in a depressed market can mean a greater value of a home
  • Buying in the wrong neighborhood in a depressed market can mean the value of your new home can depresiate further.
  • Buying when interest rates are in historic low ranges means the cost of your mortgage is less.
  • Determining your personal and financial circumstance can be with the help of a good mortgage banker (direct lender) and with the guidance of a good real estate agent.
How does this particular time meet the above highlights?

In Houston, we are a (lesser) depressed housing value market (aka = buyer's market).  The Houston values, although declined, are stable compared to other areas of the country.  "Stability" means for today's homebuyers means a greater upside in housing values.

Interest rates have been over and under 5.00% for some time.  Everyone knows that rates fluctuate daily and some time multiple times during a day.  Trying to time the bottom of the interest rate cycle is terribly futile and many times results in frustration and a missed opportunity.

If you are in the home buying market, please feel free to call on me as a resource for your mortgage questions.

Romantic Ideas for Her Birthday

Joe Flag-Suit 2

In planning for the birthday of that special girl, think small and multiple for that special birthday gift.

GUYS...big one-of-a-kind gifts are nice, if you can afford it, but are not always necessary or expected.

Consider the following ideas for the multiple warm surprises:

  • A fashionable decorative scarf is always welcome, especially one that accents a special outfit.
  • Consider also, a manicure and/or pedicure that both of you can do at the same time - think togetherness.
  • What a great time the two of you would have on an old-fashioned picnic with the blanket on the ground and at a destination that is within a short drive from home.
  • Consider the gift of time in which you give her a gift certificate of your support in cleaning the residence, running errands, shopping, picking up the laundry, etc.
  • Plant a golf ball in a funny place (e.g. inside a folded bath towel, inserted in a pair of socks, hidden in her lingerie drawer) on which you have written the magic three words of "I Love You" or similar endearing words.
  • Show your special culinary skills by planning and preparing a nice candle light dinner complete with soft music and, if appropriate, a little wine to toast the occasion.

Guys...just be your creative self and apply the age-old saying of K. I. S. S.

Think on these things

From the best advice of a farmer:

  • Every path has a few puddles
  • You cannot UNsay a cruel word
  • Always drink upsteam from the heard
  • Live simply, love generously, speak kindly and leave the rest to God
  • The best sermons are lived, not preached
  • It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge

GOD BLESS AMERICA...be sure to thank every military person for their service to our country.
