Famous Last Words...from our parents!

The following are some directives from yesterday.
Which ones do you remember"

  • Be sure to fill the ice trays, we are having company tonight.
  • It's "Yes Ma'am" and "No Ma'am" to me young man and don't you forget it - ya hear?
  • Quit slamming the screen door when you go out.
  • Be sure and pull the windows down when you leave because it looks like a shower is coming up.
  • Why don't you roll up your britches lets so they won't get caught in your bicycle chain?
  • You have torn the knees out of that pair of pants so many times there is nothing left to put a patch on now.
  • Don't go outside with your school cloths on.
  • Put a dish towel over the cake so the flies won't get on it.
  • Be sure to take the milk bottle back to the grocery so you won't have to pay a deposit on another bottle.
  • There is a dollar in my purse, get 5 gallons of gas when you go to town.
  • Don't sit too close to the TV.  It is hard on your eyes.
  • You can walk to the store; it won't hurt to get a little exercise now and then.
  • If you pull that stunt again, I am going to wear you out!
  • Be srue to wash under your neck before you come to the supper table, you have beads of dirt and sweat all under there.
  • Eat those turnips, they'll make you big and strong like your daddy.
  • Hush your mouth!  I don't want to hear words like that coming out of your mouth.  I will wash your mouth out with soap!
  • If you get a spanking in school and I find out about it, you'll get another one when you get home.
Be sure to share your personal favorites.

The Leadership Puzzle

The Leadership Puzzle...relationships are a corner piece.
(The third in a series of four short articles)

Have you ever considered what you teach people through your actions?

Are we training people to lead constructively or destructively?

Finding leadership resources is fairly easy. But, learning and applying the skills is not a consistent art, especially when we have so many role models to follow. One of my favorite leadership resources is a little known, easy to read, quietly powerful book entitled, Whale Done! by Ken Blanchard and the lead trainers at SeaWorld in San Diego.  The power of this book comes from a simple concept called the Training Whale.  When wild whales are brought into the Sea World system they are paired with a Training Whale that has learned the skills of performance. The wild whale begins to mimic and take cues from the Training Whale.  The human analogy to the Training Whale is the leadership role model. Who in the workplace would be the Training Whale?  The business owner, a co-worker, or your manager ?  Yes, all of those but also those high potential employees starving to learn to lead. The principles we read about in those leadership resources have no value unless we can live them and become the Training Whale for others to follow. There begins a constructive leadership model.

Stolen IDs Statistics

Throughout 2008, identy hit a record 10 million people, according to Javelin Strategy & Research.

The statistics behind the Stolen ID are most interesting:
  • 43% of all stolen ID incidents are from stolen wallets, checkbooks and credit/debit cards.
  • 25% of the losses were from stolen PIN from ATM cards.
  • People who make more than $75,000 per year are more likely to be victims of fraud than those who make less.
  • The most likely age range of the victims is 35 to 44 years old.
  • Among ethnic groups, Hispanics have the highest rate of fraud victims and then followed by African-Americans, Caucasians and Asians.
  • The two states with the highest number of stolen ID frauds are CA and IL, with the lowest incidents in New England and Plains states.
  • A most telling statistic is that women were 26% more likely to be fraud victims than men.  According to Javelin Strategy, the reason for this statistic is that more women spend money in retail stores, restaurants, etc and do so more frequently.

What can we do to prevent, or at least lessen, the fraud?

  1.  Share only your financial information with known vendors.
  2. Be careful to share financial information on social networking sites.
  3. Select your IDs and PWs carefully and avoid the most common dates; e.g. birthdates, house/apt. number, etc.
  4. Memorize sensitive financial information and store supporting information in a secure location; e.g. safety deposit box, safe, etc.
  5. Access your credit report via (www.annualcreditreport.com) once per year at no charge.

If you need more help in understanding the DOs and DON'Ts, please let me hear from you.

Resource Marketing

Many of you know me as a mortgage banker - a direct lender.  What if I told you I was really in the resource business?  Would you believe me?

Throughout my daily life, I offer to be a responsive resource to people seeking:
  • New career opportunities
  • Plumbers, electricians, foundation repairs, picture framers, automotive garages, etc.
  • Guest speakers for their company, trade association or civic association
  •  A dynamic chamber breakfast event to "netweave" with like-minded people
  • To meet certain people or companies to extend new business opportunities

In actively supporting others, I am often being thought of as a resource for a variety of information, referrals or opinions.  If I truly support those people who reach out to me, who are they thinking about first when buying a new home, learning of friends or associates buying a home, etc?  Obviously, my first wish is www.joestiles.com

How are you serving as a resource in your marketing efforts?

Be sure to say THANK YOU to the military personnel for our safety and security.

If your schedule permits, consider being a volunteer at the USO facilities at the Bush Intercontinenal and Hobby airports and be refreshed.
