THINK ON THESE THINGS

Looking for a J. O. B?

Many are looking for their next J. O. B. these days and my heart aches for each and every one as I, personally, have traveled that path many years ago.

Over the past 3-4 weeks, I have spoken to several oursourcing groups, former CEOs and networking groups.  As I listen to the numerous elevator speeches of each individual, a mental picture of their next J. O. B. is fixed in my mind.  I can't help but wonder "what if" those individuals could know with a 100% certainty, they will never have another J. O. B.

In my presentation, I bring up that very point to get the individuals to thinking about their next career move...probably (or hopefully) into business for themselves.

Following the cliche of "with lemons...you get lemonade," I like to tell the story about a friend of mine that was laid off from an oil field company several years ago.  Today, he and a partner are providing GPS support services for some of the same oil and oil field companies.  And, this is not a unique story today.

The difficult hurdle is to get those talented people to BOLDLY step out of the J. O. B. mentalty and become the employer.  One approach might be to find complementary individuals to partner with in a new venture.

How can the rest of us help others?  We can help open doors to targeted prospective clients for these new entrepreneurs.  We can support each and every one with testimonials to their moral values, service levels or how well they support their clients.  The social media is a simple means to share that testimonial today via linkedin.com or facebook, twitter, plaxo, etc.

By opening our minds, our network and our hearts, we can help others.

Your comments are always welcome at www.joestiles.com or joe@joestiles.com

What it takes to become an entrepreneur
The name "John Schnatter" may not be a household name but the corporate name "Papa John's Pizza" surely is a name that is recognizable.

In a recent Fortune Magzaine interview, Schnatter suggests an overview of his start in the pizza business and lays out his thoughts as follows:

Find something that comes easy to you:

John tells the story of a time when his father hired him to run Mick's Lounge for $200/week.  The bar was on the verge of  being bankrupt and John told his father he could make the operations successful.  It was something that was the most natural thing he had done, according to Schnatter.

Put your (dream) ideas to work (and do not be afraid to alter your plans).

Dream BIG and start small to implement.  As In John Schnatter's case, he dreamed of starting a pizza business that was focused on quality. Schnatter's focus was to have a national chain that acted as an independent for quality and the result was the best of both worlds; national presence and high quality.

Find a niche and be willing to take on the BIG guys in your industry

Schnatter's niche in the pizza business was "quality" products with quality ingredients.  At the time, Domino's Pizza has the speed, Little Ceasars had the price and Pizza Hut has the variety.  John identified the niche of a quality pizza and now Papa John's Pizza had of $3 billion for 2008.

The secret of Schnatter's success is defined in the article as:
  1. Papa John's measures 10,000 pizzas each month
  2. Stay connected to customers
  3. Try to do ONE thing really great.

NOW...are you ready to move forward in putting your dream into reality?

Your personal Board of Directors

We often hear about members of various company's Boards of Directors.

How many of us have a personal Board of Directors...regardless of whether we are self employed or work for a large company
???

A personal Board of Directors could consist of just a few or many people.  These people would be from a variety of industries and with varied experience.

The type of personal Board of Directors I envision is one that is able to act as my sounding board to any new venture or a specific direction I want to take my existing business.
